'Counterparts' in the same collection has a subtle link with this story isn't it, like the theme of taking out your frustration on someone who cannot respond to you.WordsBeyondBordershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17977837061092838646noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7986179846357989946.post-69595056022600344712011-11-14T04:37:55.133+05:302011-11-14T04:37:55.133+05:30I read this collection in high school and only rec...I read this collection in high school and only recently revisited one of the stories, The Dead. It amazed me that I could still remember vividly certain details.

I should revisit the whole collection at some point. In your post I especially like your analysis of Maria; usually I prefer the more simple day-to-day heroes than the superheroes.HKatzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17653570160517335758noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7986179846357989946.post-46298338131231254052011-11-03T09:38:34.877+05:302011-11-03T09:38:34.877+05:30Risa You're not alone, I didn't know Dubli...Risa You're not alone, I didn't know Dubliners was a short story collection until I read about it very recently. Also, I think in college they make Beckett unnecessarily scary. Maybe try revisiting him now?

Karen Its a mixed bag alright. Some, like Araby, I didn't think much of.

Mel U. You are very right. Ulysses and A Portrait... is all you hear about regarding Joyce.CHEhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04634088152624853449noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7986179846357989946.post-78460275070174434132011-11-03T06:05:43.812+05:302011-11-03T06:05:43.812+05:30Joyce is a master of the short story. I enjoyed recalling these stories through your excellent post. All of The Dubliners can be found online-in text and audio format.Mel uhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08714473754458914681noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7986179846357989946.post-70397920749380990182011-11-03T02:19:43.773+05:302011-11-03T02:19:43.773+05:30I was mixed about Dubliners. Then one fine day my mom took all my college books and gave them away. I never regretted losing The Dubliners...until now. I actually paid a great deal for that book and I never even knew it was a short story collection. How pathetic is that! :-/

The two stories you've just reviewed sound very appealing. I should see if I can find them online. Oh, and I'm not really a Beckett fan...at least I wasn't when I studied him college. Waiting for Godot was one of those pieces I dreaded!Songhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09707280327803432082noreply@blogger.com
